Taxation on Sports Betting in Greece
For sports and virtual sports betting, the tax on winnings is calculated using the net winnings per bet receipt:
NET PROFIT PER RECIEPT | WINNINGS TAX |
From €0 up to €100 | Tax-free (0%) |
From €100.01 up to €200 | 2.5% on the amount exceeding €100 up to €200 |
From €200.01 up to €500 | 5% on the amount exceeding €200 up to €500 |
From €500.01 and above | 7.5% on the amount exceeding €500 |
The sports betting tax is applied progressively to your net winnings: this means that for the first €100 of net profit, there is no taxation. For example:
- A bet receipt with a €10 stake, which wins €110 will not be taxed. This is because the net profit does not exceed the tax-free limit (€110 minus €10).
- A bet receipt with a €10 stake, which wins €500, will be taxed incrementally. The net profit is €490 (€500 minus €10) and the first €100 is tax-free. The amount from €100.01 to €200 is taxed at 2.5% (€100 x 2.5% = €2.50). The amount from €200.01 to €490 is taxed at 5% (€290 x 5% = €14.50). The total taxation will be €2.50 + €14.50, i.e. €17.
- A bet receipt with a stake of €10, which wins €1200 is taxed incrementally. The net profit is €1190 (€1200 minus €10) and the first €100 is tax free. The amount from €100.01 to €200 is taxed at 2.5% (€100 x 2.5% = €2.5). The amount from €200.01 to €500 is taxed at 5% (€300 x 5% = €15). The amount from 500.01 and above is taxed at 7.5% (€690 x 7.5% = €51.75). The total taxation will be €2.50 + €15 + €51.75, i.e. €69.25.
